A Glimpse of Blue: The White-tailed Jay in the Cloud Forest

2025-06-14 22:28:46

There are moments when the forest feels quiet—until it isn’t. A burst of chatter breaks the calm, followed by a flash of electric blue weaving through the canopy. The White-tailed Jay has arrived.

Endemic to the dry and cloud forests of western Ecuador, this bold and social bird rarely travels alone. During one of our recent outings, we followed a small flock as they moved from tree to tree, their striking blue plumage and bright white tails catching the morning light.

They aren’t shy, but they are fast. Watching them interact, call out, and forage is like observing a feathered family on the move. It’s pure joy—wild, untamed, and unmistakably Ecuadorian.
